Gillian Welch The beloved duo has just added another accolade to their career

accomplishments as they recently accepted the prestigious Lifetime Achievement

Award for Songwriting from the Americana Music Association. Nashville Obsolete,

the highly anticipated second album from Dave Rawlings Machine, (and the seventh

studio album on which Welch and Rawlings have collaborated together in their ac- claimed two decade long creative partnership) was just released in September.

I woke up for Day 2 of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival at 4:30 to text messages from Ted
that the blankets were successfully placed in the middle of the night as expected. In my
sleepy state I made it to golden gate Park and looked for parking. After driving around
for awhile I nabbed the perfect spot after a local resident left. Found the blanket at Banjo
stage and watched the sunrise. Saturday's schedule had lots of conflicts but coordination
amongst the tapers meant many of the desired acts were covered but as it turns out Hot Tuna was
the "taper's convention" with all tapers grouped together to capture the set. My plan was to
go see the New Mastersounds at Arrow then return to Banjo Stage for Hot Tuna through Steve Earle
who is always on my plans for Saturday. I had thought the New Mastersounds was the Mastersons
which are part of Steve Earle's band.

Opening at Arrow was Pokey LaFarge. A few people who I had been talking to were excited to see
him and I figured since Banjo Stage was being covered by Randy I would check him out. At about
10:30 I trekked over to Arrow Stage and got settled. Out comes a guy who looked like a cross
between Pee Wee Herman and Tim Lincecum with his band. As it turns out they were well worth the
trip over and lots of fun. Next up was the New Mastersounds who were actually a soul and funk band
out of Leeds England. I really enjoyed their set. Once the set ended I quickly made my way back to
Banjo Stage for the Hot Tuna set.

As Hot Tuna gets ready to take the stage I look around. I am right behind Randy. I look to my left
and there is KC. In front of Randy are my good friend Hodon and Mardon up from SoCal. This was
Hot Tuna electric which is my preference. Jorma and Jack come out and tear it up. During the set
the wind starts whipping up. This became an issue the rest of the day but seemed fitting that is
started during Hot Tuna. After Hot Tuna all the tapers moved on except Randy and myself. We were
treated to a great acoustic set by Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. During the set the wind really
picked up and can be heard through the PA. The backdrop was blown out and Dave Rawlings almost lost
his hat on many occasions. Following was Rickey Skaggs and Ry Cooder. When you listen, the comments
about the wind were as frequent as the rumbles from the PA due to the wind. Last up was the Saturday
highlight for e, Steve Earle and the Dukes. As usual they didn't disappoint. The set was mixed with
new material, some of his classics and even a great version of Hey Joe. A fitting way to end Day 2.
